78. Share the Gospel Over Gossip: Transforming Our Conversations

Nancy Bruscher Season 5 Episode 78

Do we gossip more than we share the gospel? Join me on a reflective journey as we confront the stark reality of our words. Are we known for uplifting others, or do our conversations often tear down those around us? This episode encourages deep self-examination, challenging us to consider whether our words align with the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We'll uncover the significant harm caused by gossip, a seemingly innocuous habit, and contrast it with the life-giving power of sharing the gospel.

Speaker 1:

I had this thought come to me that I wanted to share with you. Do I gossip more than I share the gospel? Do people know me more for gossiping or sharing the good news? And by the good news I mean are you sharing love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control? Are you sharing those fruits of the Spirit so that people can see something in you that is different than the world? Is it easier for me to gossip over sharing the gospel? Oh, it's so hard.

Speaker 1:

Gossip is one of those things that we probably all have done and it actually seems like it's not a big deal. Like what does it matter? It's just kind of fun to share something. Everyone does it. It's not like murdering someone and it's really interesting because if you go and just do a search on the Bible, you will see so much information about gossip that there was just too much to try to share with you. But I encourage you, go on your Bible app, search for gossip, or go on the internet and search for gossip, and you will find so much stuff on how terrible it really is, so much stuff on how terrible it really is, and I think in our own lives we can see that gossip actually truly tears each other down in such a way that's almost you can't see it, and I think that's why it's so scary and divisive and why it's so why God talks so much about it, because we think it's not a big deal, but it really is.

Speaker 1:

So here's a couple of verses Romans 1, 29 through 32. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness, and you're all like, yeah, that's terrible. Okay, here it goes. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. And it continues in verse 32. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them, but give approval to those who practice them. Oh, that hit me so hard. It was like, yes, I can see that in my life where it's okay to gossip for me or someone else, and this verse just really shook me.

Speaker 1:

My daughter has this verse memorized and it's so good. It's 1 Thessalonians 5 11. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. And again, you can find so many verses on encouraging one another and how much that means to God and how much that shows the kingdom of God and it brings life. So I encourage you to just look some of these up and just see how much this matters. Ephesians 4 29 says let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear, and do not grieve, the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption, let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God and Christ forgave you. Oh, these are so good. So I'm speaking to myself on this as well. I hope this catchphrase will stay in your mind Share the gospel over gossip.
